Top-feed Bottom-discharge Carbon Adsorber

Category:

Product Overview

The top-feed bottom-discharge activated carbon adsorber is a vertical granular-activated-carbon (GAC) adsorption bed designed for continuous or semi-continuous industrial exhaust treatment. Unlike tray-based units that require a full stop for carbon replacement, this design feeds fresh carbon from the top and discharges spent carbon from the bottom, letting the bed remain in service while media is refreshed.

The shell is fabricated from corrosion-resistant PP or PPH to withstand acidic, alkaline, and humid gas streams. A large-diameter side inlet and top outlet (or reverse configuration per process requirement) distribute airflow evenly across the carbon bed, while the gravity-driven media movement ensures that the oldest, most saturated carbon is purged first.

Key Features

Top-Feed Bottom-Discharge DesignFresh carbon is added from the top; saturated carbon is discharged from the bottom. Enables online or short-downtime media replenishment.
High Carbon UtilizationGravity-driven downward media movement pushes the most saturated carbon out first, reducing unused adsorption capacity at the top of the bed.
Low Pressure DropOpen vertical bed geometry and optimized gas distribution keep system resistance within a controlled range even at higher airflows.
PP / PPH ConstructionCorrosion-resistant thermoplastic shell suitable for acid, alkali, and solvent-laden industrial exhaust.
Scalable AirflowSuited to medium-to-large exhaust volumes where continuous operation and lower carbon handling labor are priorities.
Inspection & Sampling PortsMultiple access points for carbon level monitoring, sampling, and internal inspection without full dismantling.

Working Principle

Contaminated exhaust enters the adsorber through the side inlet and flows horizontally or vertically through the granular activated carbon bed. Pollutant molecules are captured by physical adsorption on the large internal surface area of the carbon particles, and treated gas exits through the outlet.

Because the carbon bed moves slowly downward under gravity, the lowest layer — which has been exposed to the highest pollutant concentration for the longest time — reaches saturation first and is discharged from the bottom. Fresh or regenerated carbon is added from the top, maintaining a consistent adsorption front and minimizing the downtime associated with batch media replacement.

Applications

  • Municipal wastewater treatment and pumping station odor control
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical process vents
  • Food processing, rendering, and fermentation exhaust
  • Printing, adhesive curing, and solvent recovery vent lines
  • Electronics and semiconductor exhaust pretreatment
  • Refinery and petrochemical off-gas polishing
