FRP (Fiberglass-Reinforced Plastic) Storage Tank
An FRP storage tank is a composite of glass-fiber reinforcement in a thermoset resin matrix. It combines low weight (roughly one-quarter the weight of steel), broad corrosion resistance and the ability to be built at very large volumes. The resin system — not the fiber — defines chemical service: unsaturated polyester for water/wastewater/mild duty, vinyl ester for acids and many solvents at higher temperature, and epoxy where solvent resistance or higher temperature is required (at higher cost).
Construction
- Filament-wound cylindrical shell for uniform strength; hand-layup for complex shapes.
- Domed or cone bottoms, manways and nozzles per duty.
- Double-wall construction available for secondary containment of hazardous liquids.
Properties
- Lightweight and easy to install / relocate.
- Non-conductive, low thermal conductivity, low maintenance.
- Large capacities (commonly 1000+ m³ for water/wastewater).
Chemical Resistance
Suited to potable and raw water, seawater, wastewater, mild acids (resin-dependent), salt solutions and many solvents (vinyl ester). Service temperature is resin-limited — typically up to ~80 °C for polyester, ~120 °C for vinyl ester, higher for specialty epoxies. Not for strong oxidizers at temperature, and UV-exposed tanks need a UV-inhibiting topcoat.
