The low pressure drop associated with packed bed scrubbers permits the use of smaller more economical fans. Although efficiency may be affected, a packed tower will usually function when gas or liquor flows vary from its original design parameters.

A packed bed scrubber effectively removes various toxic substances as contaminated gas flows upward through the tower. A spray of scrubbing liquid or water neutralizes harmful components in the gas. To enhance the reaction process, media packing can be added to the column, which retains the scrubbing solution and optimizes the neutralization process. As the gas ascends and the scrubbing solution cleans the exhaust, additional reagents or makeup water are introduced at the base of the system.
